While there are a variety of different saltwater flies available to striper anglers, we find we only need three— Deceiver (or Hollow), Crab, and Clouser. That said, sometimes it is fun to throw a shrimp pattern to fish feeding on the flats!

Deceivers and Hollow Flies can look similar in a photo. For those of you that are just starting, or are unfamiliar with these patterns, there is a small but important difference between the two. Hollow flies are tied on the hook in a manner which provides the appearance of bulk and a rounded baitfish profile without adding extra weight. A deceiver is tied using the same materials, only a more traditional method which gives the fly a “flatter” appearance.
